Okay, a lot of you were asking for this one... so, with the greatest of respect to Mr. EVH, we had to make it happen!
Following the passing of one of the very greatest guitar players of our time, we were all served with a somber reflection on all things that made him so legendary and inspiring to millions; his touch, his tone, his techniques and his innovations - not just in playing, but with gear, too. In the spirit of the Tale of Two Tones series, we wanted to take a closer look at that latter part.
As usual, we’re not trying to cop any of the particular tones that Eddie laid down on record or used live, but rather to get in to a fraction of his headspace that led to some of the coolest, most raucous and invigorating guitar tones of all time. This episode focuses mainly on the latter day tones of higher gain and saturation, with a few choice EVH effects thrown in for good measure. We’re using the mighty Soldano SLO-100, an amp that was said to have served as primary inspiration for the lineage of signature amp designs, initially released in the early 1990s. In many ways, this is the purest representation of the later 80s / early 90s EVH tonal mindset that we could get our hands on.
Jack takes the time to walk you through some of the features of the latest models from the EVH brand, who are continuing the legacy of his developments in the musical instrument game with the new Wolfgang Special, along with the classic re-interpretation of the legendary ‘Shark’ guitar.
We hope you enjoy this Tale of Two Tones, it’s dedicated to the legacy and memory of one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Let us know in the comments what you think of these tones, as well as what Eddie Van Halen meant to you.
Check out 'Part One', where Jack gives his take on some of the more vintage, 'brown sound' elements of Eddie's early tones, as well as what the mighty EVH means to him HERE, once you've finished watching today's video! - https://youtu.be/QV-MwhOcrl4
