Welcome back to ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com. Today, we’re paying respects to the Statesman, from Supro Amps. The Statesman is a burly 50-watt amp 6L6-powered head that combines both the Thunderbolt and Comet preamps under one hood, while adding a slew of modern features that should satisfy any guitarist out there. The preamp section of the Statesman isn’t just a simple parts swap, containing the whole circuit for both Comet and Thunderbolt, giving you the option to run either preamp separately, or both of them in parallel for a massive, all-tube room-filling tone. The Red Thunderbolt side gives you tons of headroom for a hungry pedal platform that delivers rock ‘n’ roll tone by the truckful, while the Blue Comet side delivers a higher-gain crunch with a two-band EQ and a tube-driven reverb section. The Blue channel also features a tube-driven effects loop with individual levels for both Send and Return, allowing you to use the loop as a valve-powered clean boost when nothing is connected. You can even use the Return level control as a master volume knob if you’d like breakup tones at bedroom volumes. The all-tube Reverb of the blue channel features a relay-driven spillover effect that lets the reverb’s decay ring out when switching back to the Red channel. A handy toggle switch lets you switch between class A and class AB operation, with Class A operation giving you that characteristic Supro midrangey growl, while Class AB raises the headroom and lowers the compression. The Statesman can be paired with a matching 2x12 cabinet, and is finished in Black Rhino Hide Tolex, for killer looks to match its killer tone.
