The 5 watt, 1x8 combo has been a staple of the amp world since the early 1950's. It has withstood the test of time because, through its simplicity, amazing tones are achieved. The Tweedtone by Sonic Pipe Amplifiers has it's own spin that makes this a must own. Let's start with the ALL tube design. No solid state rectifier here, this one features a 6Z4 Rectifier Tube that allows the amp to sound open and rich. You'll hardly miss reverb with how harmonically rich and complex this little guy sounds.
The controls are very simple. Volume and Tone. Personally, I dime the volume and roll off the guitar's volume to clean it up which allows you to tap in to the array of over driven tones the Tweedtone has. The tone control allows for the right amount of variation to brighten up a dark guitar and to warm up a bright instrument. Though the circuit is simple, the sound it creates is harmonically complex.
It is powered by a single 6V6 power tube that allows this amp to break up with classic over drive when pushed and purr with warm sweetness when you back off the volume on your guitar. With the amp dimed and a Tele with the volume at 4, I achieved some of the warmest, sweetest tones I have heard in recent memory. Bringing the guitar volume up brings on some raucous, natural overdrive that can easily be tamed by slightly rolling off.
The Carbon Composition Resistors and Orange Drop Capacitors are very reliable, provide long life and are very quiet when used in an audio circuit.
The stock speaker is an 8" Celestion that makes this amp sound fantastic no matter what kind of guitar you are playing. The bottom end never gets loose or flabby, even Les Paul's and ES-335's maintain their articulation.
The cabinet is made from 18mm pine which is sturdy enough to handle the rigors of the road, plus it truly contributes to the tone. The entire cabinet resonates, only adding to the fullness and making it an inspiring playing experience.
