Bruce Hornsby Piano Solo for Guitar - Part 1 of 4 - Guitar Instruction and Breakdown

This guitar lesson is quite different from most. We are going to look at a really cool piano solo from the Bruce Hornsby song called Sneaking Up On Boo Radley.

This is a really cool technique to get out of the common problem of feeling like you are playing the same licks and patterns all the time. By transcribing solos or licks from different instruments you will stumble on a whole bunch of new ideas and sequences.

This happens because each instrument has certain characteristics unique to that instrument that make some patterns and sequences easier to play then would be on other instruments. Learning these ideas will often make you play things on guitar in ways you wouldn't normally come up with on your own.

This also works with chord voicings. Take for example chords on piano ... you have 10 fingers to play a single chord. On guitar you can only play 6 notes at a time (on a 6 string guitar). However often piano players don't play full 10 note chord voicings. But even a simple 4 note chord voicing on piano could be challenging on guitar because they could be playing in multiple octaves with ease. So it's often quite a challenge to play even simple chord voicings on guitar that were played on piano. But this challenge opens up new ideas.

So onto this lesson ...

This solo is really straight forward but at the same time it is really pretty awesome. The rhythmic phrasing is just awesome and the solo really outlines the chords it is playing over which you can hear when you play the solo without any chords accompanying it.

We will be doing more lessons on this technique in the near future. We will be diving into a lot of ideas transcribed from saxophone players ... those are always super fun to play on guitar and saxophones have a unique way of phrasing because of the necessity to take breaths while playing.

If you are interested in transcribing some great ideas from other instruments I would suggest anything from John Coltraine, Michael Brecker, Charlie Parker, Wayne Shorter or Kenny G :)
