The man in the iron mask with the iron right hand, Mick Thomson's ferocious riffing and inventive lead work have been at the core of Slipknot's genre-defining music since the mid-'90s, laying down his brand of hyper-aggressive guitar on every release since their eponymous debut album.

Despite being ostensibly part of the "one-finger" Nu Metal crowd, Thomson is a genuine "Player's Player." Before achieving world-straddling fame with Slipknot, Thomson was a highly respected guitar teacher in his hometown of Des Moines, Iowa, extolling the virtues of Shrapnel-era shred guitar to eager young minds. Even amid an era where "technical" guitar playing was often mocked and derided (perhaps hypocritically, given the praise drummer Joey Jordison deservedly received for his outrageous chops), Thomson continued to carry the torch for shred guitar. Not even his own "…And Justice For All" moment — when producer Ross Robinson erased his solos on Slipknot's first album — could deter him.

In this session, we're going to dip our toes into Thomson's diverse and aggressive style. I'm playing a PRS CE24 loaded with a Fishman Fluence Mick Thomson set (what else?), tuned to Drop B (B-F#-B-E-G#-C#). Thomson has used a wide variety of amps over the years, one of which is the Mesa Boogie JP-2C (which we're using here through an IR of Thomson's signature Eminence DV-77 speaker).
