This cool Jazz Lick is a ii V I Lick in the style of Howard Roberts. This is the second Lick we have done a Lesson on based off of an article on Howard Roberts in the December 2012 issue of Guitar Techniques Magazine.

... to learn another Quick, relatively simple Jazz Lick that will immediately get you sounding like you've been playing Jazz for years. Also check out the description for that video to Learn more about Howard Roberts.
This is another really short yet extremely cool ii-V-I Lick. This Lick incorporates a cool arpeggio that you probably already know ... but superimposes it over another chord to get that jazzy 9th note. It also slips in a little Melodic Minor flavor and ends with a cool bluesy kind of phrasing. This is one of those Licks that sounds great and is really fun to play. It is also a great Lick to learn a lot from and to expand your musical vocabulary. There are several really cool concepts being used in this Lick that we will breakdown and expand upon.
Even if you are not a die hard Jazz player ... you're not going to want to skip these lessons. These are Licks you can Learn a lot from and incorporate into many styles of playing. Guys Lick Guthrie Govan, Greg Howe, Scott Henderson, John Mayer, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Allen Hinds and countless other great guitar players have studied Licks like these and use these fundamental concepts in many of their own Licks and Solos. This may sound like a Bebop Jazz Lick ... but that is because it's being played on a clean guitar tone with a swing feel. But crank up the distortion, play it with some attitude and experiment with a few of the notes and you have a Lick that will spice up any of your Rock, Blues or Fusion playing.
This Lesson is one in a series of many short Lessons we have over at GuitarBreakdown.com. These can all be found in the Free Lessons section of our site. The intent of each one of these "Quick Licks" Lessons is to show some really cool but short Ideas and show how you can take a simple Concept or Lick and create a bunch of other great Licks of your own. We will have "Quick Licks" based on all styles from Jazz to Rock to Country and Fusion. Even if you are not a fan of a particular style of Guitar playing we suggest you check out each one of these Lessons because regardless the style ... these short Ideas can be used in any style of music.
In each one of these "Quick Licks" Lessons you will walk away learning a short 5 or 6 note Concept or a quick one or two Measure Lick ... which is awesome in itself. But then the fun begins. We will explore with you a bunch of different ways that you can expand on this Lick / Concept ... and really have it become a part of your own playing.
