Before electrifying any of its guitars, Gibson tried a handful of novel design features to make its acoustic instruments louder, from bigger body sizes to multiple f-holes cut into the soundboard—even putting a smaller “amplifying double tone chamber” inside the body of acoustic guitars. Likely a precursor to the famed Gibson “Jumbo” flat-top acoustics that came later, including the J-45, Gibson pulled out all the stops in an attempt to amplify the natural acoustic resonance of this historic 1931 HG-22.
