The WMD Aperture is a super versatile Bandpass Filter in the Eurorack Format of modular synthesizers.
In this video, we use the Aperture as a mixing tool to shape sound, and help a drum loop fit into an existing patch with a lot going on.
Using the Filter as a sort of live Eurorack EQ, we isolate the high hats, and mid-range percussion just as a producer would do in the studio, however this is all in real time as if we were in the middle of a live performance.
This is filter more unique than most standard multimode filters as it literally has an independent filter for both Low-Pass and High-Pass that can be controlled in a number of ways. The Aperture Filter has a variable width on the bandpass so you can really dial in the range of frequencies you want to hear.
In this example, I cut out the lows first, cutting the bass drum out of the drum loop, and letting the kick drum on my other channel be loud and proud, with no interference or phase cancellation. After I have the bass frequencies souding right, I bring in some more instruments with high frequency contact (tambourine and claps). After that, I dial in the High-End by moving the width and Frequency knobs, using my ears to get the high hats and percussion in the loop to sit tight and pretty.
Next I experiment with a bit of Feedback and send the Aperture in to a bit self oscillation. It is known for self oscillating out of control, but I really try and just emphasize the character of the filter and the drum loop.
A perfect addition to your live modular synth rig, the Aperture is back in stock as we just completed a new batch.
