On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich dive into guitar amp tone, where it comes from… and that recent Jim Lill video (“Tested: Where Does The Tone Come From In A Guitar Amplifier?”) which is taking the guitar world by storm right now!
We got a bunch of comments asking for our thoughts on Jim’s new video, in which he goes to great lengths to find out and test which parts and components of guitar amplifiers are actually responsible for shaping the tones we ultimately hear. It’s a fantastic video, by the way, and if you haven’t watched it yet, do it! It’s here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcBEOcPtlYk
And so, on the show, Thomas will give you a full and thorough reaction to Jim’s video from the perspective of an experienced amp maker and guitar tone connoisseur. You’ll be surprised to find out how many of Thomas’s own AMP1 innovations bear similarities to some of Jim’s conclusions and experiments – but these were only the starting point. So, Thomas will use the show to explain why it takes a lot more to create genuine boutique tones.
Starting with Jim’s earliest experiments with tube types, and moving on through tone stacks, distortion types, the guys will look in more detail at the idea of how different amps produce different – and indeed, similar – tones, and Thomas will look to the level beyond what Jim’s video shows. There is a lot that goes into making amplifiers sound the way they do, and a lot of pieces in the chain that also affect how your guitar will sound when the listener hears it, and Thomas will showcase as much of this as possible.
The guys will also discuss the idea that, if amps really are as simple as Jim’s video makes them seem, then surely the guitar amp industry has a few questions to answer when it comes to marketing terminology and promoting certain components way beyond their tonal paygrade.
We’ll also grab a few choice drive pedals and see if we can’t make our own version of something resembling Jim’s wonderful Tacklebox amp, and finally, we plan to have a very special surprise guest for you: one of the world’s top boutique tube amp makers. You can look forward to an extremely insightful discussion between him and Thomas.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on this debate too, so join us in the chat and we’ll get a really interesting discussion going!
