We caught up with Roland's Paul McCabe, who introduced us to the Roland Future Design Lab. This is a new division within Roland, established in July, which focuses on exploring emerging trends and technologies rather than creating finished products themselves. A think tank, if you like.
The lab recently unveiled their first proof of concept, the Tone Explorer. Developed under the guidance of Sasamori-San, the tool leverages AI to assist musicians in selecting sounds that best match their compositions.
Tone Explorer operates as a web browser plugin utilizing Web MIDI to load MIDI files for analysis. It evaluates the semantic elements of musical phrases and matches them with corresponding acoustic parameters from a database of Zen-Core patches. The interface offers a constellation view, allowing you to explore sound variations and rank them based on fit scores. While still a proof of concept, Tone Explorer hints at future developments in both software and hardware integration.
