On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is joined by a very special guest – his nephew, Finn – to dive into the psychology of the guitar player over the generations, from the birth of rock and roll to the 2020s… and beyond!
Growing up as a guitar player in the 21st century is a completely different experience than Thomas and many of his contemporaries had. On the show, he and Finn will talk about being guitar players in their own eras, and how their respective backgrounds have shaped their own destinies as players and musicians.
Thomas, for example, was born in the 1960s. Rock and roll was in its earlier days, and the bands and guitarists who would go on to definite the genre were at the top of their game, or were not far away from that. Thomas grew up with guitar music on popular radio, with touring bands regularly coming to town, and in a time where there was no social media – so these rockstars truly seemed to be alien beings from another planet!
When Thomas picked up the guitar, he could either learn it through a teacher and books, or by listening to records (on vinyl, naturally) over and over again and picking things up by ear. And in terms of gear, there was far less choice back then than we have today – and a ‘61 Strat was almost affordable!
Finn, by contrast, was born in the 90s and grew up in the 2000s. By this time, rock music had already become less of a mainstream genre, and guitar tones (and playing styles) had changed massively. Punk, grunge and heavy metal had happened, and the 2000s indie revival changed the way guitarists played, and the sounds they sought. Later came progressive metal, which turned things on their head once again. Because of all this, Finn loves sleek, modern (and headless) guitars like Strandbergs, but he also has a massive soft spot for Thomas’s 60s Gibson 335.
He also got to approach the instrument totally differently. Sure, Thomas was around to give his young nephew the occasional lesson, but Finn could also take advantage of guitar tab websites and video sites like YouTube to learn guitar any time, and for free. Plus, right from the beginning, he was able to use social media to discover music from all over the world, AND promote his own bands on websites like Instagram and Facebook. And, in 2022, there is way more affordable and decent quality guitar gear available for the budding player.
Finn is also an educated musician, having recently completed his degree in the subject, with a thesis entitled “How the writing of commercial music is changing under the influence of streaming’s payment mechanisms” (in German: “Wie sich das Schreiben kommerzieller Musik unter den Bezahlmechanismen des Streamings verändert”). He and Thomas will also discuss this topic, along with others from Finn’s studies.
All things considered, Thomas and Finn couldn’t be more different in some ways. But in others, they are surprisingly similar – and it’s going to be a very interesting discussion. We’d love to hear your thoughts on all of this, too: join us in the chat and Thomas and Finn will engage with as many of your comments as possible!
