On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is joined by special guest Knut Bausch to take a deep dive into how to achieve the best tones – and the best playing feel – as a guitarist, whether you’re on stage or in the studio!

Of course, we talk a lot about tone on the Academy Of Tone. It’s in the name, after all! But something that’s almost as important as the sounds we achieve – and indeed, something that actually helps us towards those hallowed tones – is the playing feel of our setup.

As professional live and touring guitarists with decades of experience between them, Thomas and Knut are here to make great tone AND great playing feel attainable to all, whatever your rig. On the show, the guys will take a tonal journey through the whole signal chain, from guitar to speaker. Along the way, they’ll assess and explain the pros and cons of all the options you can choose, from the classic mic’ed up amp/cab to going direct, or even using plugins exclusively.

Thomas, as you well know, is a master of the analog setup. Knut, however, is not just an AMP1 user – he’s also a product specialist for Axe-FX, and he’ll be bringing his FM9 to the show alongside his AMP1 pedalboard to fully showcase his hybrid rig.

There are a number of factors that can affect any kind of setup when it comes to playing feel. Particularly the digital domain, latency can be a real problem, so the guys will explain how to minimize this in your rig. There are numerous devices that, when combined in your setup, can result in unwanted latency: things like wireless systems, digital FX pedals, modelers, sound cards (with analog/digital conversion), DAWs, and digital mixing consoles, monitor speakers and in-ear systems can all be guilty here.

The guys will demonstrate this as much as possible during the show, and they’ll also compare the tones you get when using headphones, in-ears, monitor speakers and a regular guitar cabinet like the NANOCAB.
