The history of the guitaramp power-amp PLUS giants of fuzz featuring the Rat, Wampler Ratsbane, Fuzz Face and more!
On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich take a deep dive into the exciting history of the guitar power amp! Over the decades, there have been many kinds of power amps, and their individual designs and characters have had a huge influence on shaping the guitar tones we all know and love. Under Thomas’s microscope will be single-ended, Class A, Class AB, Class C and Class D power amps – some tube, some non-tube – and there will be a bunch of A/B comparisons to help us hear the differences!
Thomas will use an AMP1 and other preamps and we’ll throw a bunch of different power amps at them to hear the differences: the AMP1 Mercury Edition, the Iridium Edition, some classic Marshalls, a Hughes & Kettner VS 250 and more!
We’ll also try out some combinations using the Mercury Edition and the Iridium, and the other goal here is to show you guys the different advantages that all these different power amps and technology types off you as a guitar player. And, of course, we’ll discuss why the BluGuitar Nanotube technology offers you the best of both worlds!
PLUS, things are about to get seriously fuzzy! To celebrate the release of the new Wampler Ratsbane pedal – which is Brian Wampler’s take on the classic ProCo Rat distortion pedal – the guys have decided to bring their favorite fuzzes for a mammoth shootout!
