In this Fender Play LIVE clip, host Eugene Edwards sits down with special guest, guitarist Brian Whelan to discuss the CAGED system and how it can be used to play different chord positions and songs. To illustrate this concept, Brian Whelan rips into a killer version of “I Fought the Law” by The Bobby Fuller Four, which was originally written by Sonny Curtis of Buddy Holly and The Crickets fame and later covered by The Clash. Beginner and experienced guitarists can listen for the jangly, Buddy Holly style of guitar playing on this song, as well as observe how Whelan uses different versions of the same chords on both the verses and within the solo portion of “I Fought the Law.” Whelan also offers guitarists a detailed explanation of the CAGED system of using chord shapes to create chord intervals further down the neck of the guitar, taking familiar open chords and playing them in a higher register to lend color and depth to a song.
