Today at ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com, we're unwrapping the Crayon, by JHS Pedals. The Crayon is engineered to emulate the classic distortion sound that happens only when pushing a console preamp to its limits, giving you intensely pulverizing fuzz and distortion tone that is unequaled by any other box out there. Unlike the Colour Box, the Crayon accomplishes this with minimal controls, providing you with a master volume and a far reaching Preamp Volume knob. This Pre-Vol knob covers all conceivable direct-in base, from sparkling preamp tones to full-on massively clipped console destruction. A handy Tilt control functions as an active EQ, turning it down boosts lows and cuts highs, while turning it up produces the opposite effect. The Hi-Pass switch works with the Tilt control and a small switch on the side, setting a hard floor of 200Hz or 750Hz when activated and allowing no frequencies below them to pass through the pedal. All controls are very interactive, and small adjustments mean big-time changes. Your fingers also play an integral role in the distortion level. In higher positions on the Pre-Vol knob, the pedal becomes extremely touch-sensitive, allowing you to melt faces on demand. With a pedal this touch sensitive, you would expect it to clean up beautifully, and it does. Rolling back on your guitar's volume knob tames the raw power of the Crayon and restores some order to your signal. Like all JHS pedals, the Crayon is made by a crew of humans right here in the USA.
