Zach Irons recently went from opening up for Awolnation with his own band, Irontom, to taking the lead guitar reins on Awolnation’s current tour. Tessa Jeffers met with Irons in Nashville to discuss the setup he’s using live.
Zach Irons’ main live guitar is a lefty Japanese Stratocaster with handpainted fingernail polish that Irons applied himself. His grandmother bought it for him online three years ago. Irons is right-handed but he plays guitar left-handed. Irons started out playing drums before switching to guitar, and he says finding notes and chords on the neck with his dominant hand worked better for him. Irons uses Ernie Ball (.010–0.46) strings and Dunlop medium picks.
Most Awolnation songs Irons plays live are in standard tuning, except “I Am,” which is tuned down a half step. For this he uses his G&L ASAT Classic, which he modified by replacing the stock humbucker with a lipstick pickup.
