Shifty Mode takes your playing and uses it to move the EQ back to its most transparent setting. Play quietly and the EQ will be active, in this case removing a lot of highs. But play louder and your true sound shines through. It's sort of like an envelope filter but with the Stereo Spread to offset which side becomes clear first it becomes a new effect entirely!
