Michael Landau Arpeggio Guitar Lesson - Concept / Lick - Part 2 of 3 - Guitar Breakdown - Guitar instruction and Breakdown.
Michael Landau is a guitar God! And like most gods ... he can be seen and heard everywhere.
But seriously ... just look at the liner notes of most cd's (or cassette tapes ... depending on how old you are) and you will find his name credited at least 5 out of 10 times.
He was one of the most sought after guitar session players in Los Angeles in the 1980's and 1990's along with Steve Lukather, Dann Huff, Michael Thompson, and Dean Parks. He recorded with Michael Jackson, Richard Marx, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Pink Floyd, Miles Davis, Rod Stewart and too many others to list.
If you are new to Michael Landau ... I would highly suggest you go immediately to your favorite music store and without research or hesitation and purchase "Tales from the bulge", "Organic Instrumentals" and both his "Live" cd's. These recordings alone will keep you entertained and learning for years (and that is no exaggeration).
Also check out his Renegade Creation stuff. This has some amazing playing as well where he combines forces with the great Robben Ford. I would actually suggest you listen to any and all things Michael Landau ... you will not be disappointed.
As for this guitar lesson we will breakdown a concept / lick he plays in a video that was recently uploaded to youTube. It is a really cool arpeggio idea that is relatively simple in terms of it's concept. Once you get this idea under your fingers you should be able to work it into many different situations in your own playing.
This concept is also similar to an idea discussed in an old REH book by either Don Mock, Steve Freeman or Steve Travato. I'm not sure if the books are still available but I would highly recommend you try to find them and buy them. I believe the Don Mock book was called "fusion hotlines" by REH. And the Steve Freeman book was Jazz Rock Lines (I think) also by REH (I think). I know Steve Travato put out a bunch of country books but I also thought he put out a jazz one too (I could be wrong).
I will try and update this description with better details on those books as soon as I sift through my stuff and find my copies.
Anyway ... we will also discuss the idea presented in one of those books (I wish I remembered which one it came from ... sorry about that). And also explore how you can begin to use this concept in your own playing.
We plan on doing a lot more lessons on the great Michael Landau ... there is just so much good stuff to discuss on his playing. So if you are as big a Michael Landau fan as I am ... please do subscribe and stick around for more lessons in the near future.
To see the awesome Michael Landau play this solo just go to this link:
http://youtu.be/pURGMRdKRus
The solo starts from the beginning of the video and goes about 30 seconds in (the part I played). And the arpeggio sequence begins at about 12 seconds in.
Ok ... hope you enjoy this lesson and continue to check out our videos. We have a lot of fun things planned for the future, hope you stick around ...
