Academy Of Tone #67: Metal meets the Summer Of Love! Manni Zewe on the new Godslave album PLUS the influence of 1967 on music!
On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is joined by special guest Manni Zewe – of German metallers Godslave – to talk the metal, the 1967 Summer Of Love, and more!
Godslave have a new album on the way – Positive Aggressive – and Manni will go behind the scenes in detail to give us the full story on the record. He’ll also do four guitar playthroughs from the album, and give us all a few practical tips for improving our metal chops, as well as going into all the details of the writing and recording process of the record.
Positive Aggressive was created under totally different conditions to the band’s previous albums, and Manni will explain how their thought processes and philosophies towards the new songs changed the final result. And, of course, we can’t forget AMP1 in all of this – Manni used his beloved Iridium Edition to lay down the brutal and precise guitar parts on the album, and he’ll share everything on the iridium settings and channels he used during the studio process.
In the second half of the show, it’s a case of metal meets the Summer Of Love as Thomas and Manni teach each other a few tricks! The guys will show that while there’s definitely a few things metal guitarists can learn from playing in other styles, there’s also loads that more traditional players like Thomas can learn from the intricacies of metal!
Thomas will also tell the story of the Summer Of Love from his own perspective. The year 1967 was monumental in the history of both music and 20th century popular culture, when a new generation of young people came together to defy their elders and promote their own new ideas of peace, culture, art, music and politics.
It led to several iconic moments, such as the Woodstock festival, and the mindset of 1967 has stuck around with the generations of musicians who have come since – including Thomas Blug himself! Thomas, of course, was hugely influenced by a certain Mr. Jimi Hendrix and his Stratocaster guitars, and Thomas today has a Vintage Summer Of Love signature model.
In this part of the show, Thomas will talk about the magic of 67, and the influence that summer had on music and musicians, as well as the history of the hippie and art movements, all of which still dramatically affect our daily lives over 50 years later. We’d love to hear your own memories and thoughts on the Summer Of Love too, so join us in the chat and tell us yours!
