On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is back with PART 2 of his deep dive into the fabulous effect that is tape echo!
Last week, we went through the history of tape delay as an effect, and Thomas put the new digital Boss RE-2 Space Echo up against the original: the iconic Roland RE-201. (You can see that show here, by the way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yabNzHgm3yw)
This week, there’s more comparisons afoot, and Thomas also takes a more detailed look at the idea of multihead tape delays and the extra options they offer. You’ll be pleased to learn that Thomas managed to repair his vintage Watkins Copicat delay, so that’ll definitely be getting a serious showcase.
This show will see Thomas comparing the legendary Echoplex delay against his personal favorite, the Hughes & Kettner Replex, and he’ll also look into a number of other highly-thought of tape echo units, including the Vox Echo, the Dynacord Echocord Super, the Fulltone Custom Shop Tube Tape Echo, the cult Hall and Collins Signature Echo (which is a highly advanced digital modeler of Tape Echoes), the Yamaha UD Stomp Modulation Delay, and more!
These delay units all offer their own unique take on the tape echo effect. Some are digital, some are solid state, and some are tube powered. Some of them actually contain real tape, and some of them are purely digital… but they all contain the magic of what makes tape delay such a unique and creative effect for guitarists and musicians everywhere.
