On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich are going on a journey to find the best tube amp tones at manageable volumes using power soaks and reactive loads! And in a related discussion, we’ll dive into speaker simulations for stage and recording purposes and compare and contrast all this to using an AMP1-based setup!
Traditional tube amps have defined the tonal standard for the electric guitar for decades. These amps were used to write musical history, as they are the backdrop for so many iconic guitar tones. But the stages and studios of the 21st century require different solutions for the performing players.
Most of the classic tube amps are ‘too loud’ for modern-day stages, and because of this, we can now see a proliferation of tools to make them quieter and more manageable – Plexiglas shields (like the DeeFlexx system), power soaks, attenuators, reactive load boxes, etc. On top of this, IR loaders are now often used as an alternative to miccing up speaker cabinets, which provides a more reliable and consistent sound between performances.
The situation has changed massively in studios too. The classic 20th century studio had cavernous recording rooms with separate monitoring rooms for the engineers – which meant that even very loud amps could be recorded at full blast if necessary. But, since recording has become so much cheaper and easier in recent years, many big studios have disappeared, and we even see global megastars recording in their own home studios. And of course, these smaller spaces are usually missing isolated recorded rooms for loud guitar amps!
So, how do you record – or even play – these tone monsters of a bygone age without destroying the ears of your neighbors? Well, the industry has been creative on this front too, and there are now a number of options available to get the most out of your tube amps at any volume. Thomas and Rich will look at power soaks, reactive loads, the Fryette Power Station, the Universal Audio Ox Box, the Two Notes Captor X, and the Marshall SE 100, as well as options from Harley Benton and Groove Tubes. And we’ll compare these results to that of simply using an AMP1!
So, stay tuned for an existing journey into today’s multiple tools and practice options with tube amps in comparison with the AMP1!
And to close out the show, we have a special interview Thomas did with Tony Carey, keyboard wizard, former member of Rainbow, and member of a number of Thomas’s various musical projects!
