On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich are wondering… can guitar pedals ever sound and feel as good as a great amplifier?
With FX pedals more popular than ever, this is a really interesting discussion, and one where every player has their own strong opinion. In one corner, we have the amplifier purists, for whom guitar into amp is more than enough. In the other, we have the “more pedals is more good” corner, for whom the accumulation of stompboxes is the only way to improve their tone! And in the middle, we have everyone else.
While Thomas regularly uses a variety of pedals to achieve certain tones – Blug Plays Hendrix wouldn’t be what it is without a special drive pedal, for example – he’s certainly on the traditional side of the pedal divide. Some of you will also remember the times before pedals were deemed essential in every rig – the times when pedalboards weren’t even a thing!
So, where does this pedal mania come from? Lots of players now assume that they need pedals to sound their best, but is this really the case? One thing’s for sure: pedals give you easy access with dedicated knobs that instantly react while doing the tone hunt. It’s also true that we can only get certain sounds from certain pedals. But does that make them the solution for everything?
On this episode, the guys will really look into this idea in detail, and we’ll use the AMP1 as a comparison against the best the pedal world has to offer. We’ll go through the different pedal types and what they offer us, and then discuss what’s going on in amp equivalents. Thomas will also use the AMP1’s boost, four preamps (plus the low gain mode) and power amp options to see how close we can get to a bunch of different legendary drive pedals running through clean pedal platform amps.
Here’s a good example of the debate: is the iconic Friedman gain tone best from a pedal, or is it best coming from a channel on a real tube amp? That’s something the guys will attempt to find out!
We’ll also talk about some of the players whose sounds have been defined by the FX they use – players like Ritchie Blackmore (Range Master), Brian May (Range Master), Stevie Ray Vaughan (Tube Screamer), Jimi Hendrix (fuzz), John Meyer (Klon, Tube Screamer, you name it!), Tom Morello (Whammy) and Jack White (MXR Micro Amp, Big Muff, Whammy, etc.) – and those guitarists who are more known for their pure approach to tone, such as Angus and Malcolm Young, Keith Richards, Slash, Robert Cray, BB King, Duane Allman and Dicky Betts, Eric Clapton, Michael Schenker, and more.
So, join us for an exciting discussion and deep dive into pedals and amps, and bring your suggestions too! We’re excited to hear your thoughts on this debate…
