The Fender American Ultra II Telecaster updates the sound and playability of the iconic model that has been the rocket fuel for everything from Texas twang to British punk and beyond. The tonal onslaught is provided by two Ultra II Noiseless Vintage Tele pickups, with added sonic flexibility provided by Fender’s S-1 switch—which activates a series-wiring option in the middle-pickup position. The American Ultra II Telecaster also offers dreamy playability with its Modern D profile, quartersawn neck with rolled edges and an Ultra Satin finish. In addition, there’s a 10" to 14" compound radius ebony or maple fingerboard, as well as tapered neck heel and sculpted body contours.
“Telecasters are probably the coolest guitars ever made,” says Los Angeles-based session guitarist Mason Stoops (Jackson Browne, Lizzy McAlpine, Katy Perry). “If you put the American Ultra II side-by-side with its great-great grandfather from 1952, the guitars would look identical from a distance, but if you zoom in, you’ll see changes and tweaks on the Ultra II that help with modern playing. For example, the Ultra II offers a six-saddle bridge for really precise intonation, an S-1 switch that puts the neck and bridge pickup in series—moving you from a classic, bright Tele sound to a darker, more humbucker-like tone—and an angled pickup-selector switch that’s a little easier to grab on the fly. The compound radius fingerboard is rounder near the nut for comfortable chording, and it gets flatter as you work your way up the neck for more effortless bends and overall playability. I also like the ‘secret’ comfort contours on the back of the guitar. No one’s going to know—you still look very cool from the front.”
