In this short guitar lesson we breakdown a quick guitar lick played by Josh Smith. If you are not familiar with Josh Smith ... check his channel out here:

I stumbled on his awesomeness about two years ago when I was looking up xotic fx pedals. He was one of the new guitar players being featured on their web site at the time. I think he was demoing the xotic fx BB pre amp pedal, the RC Booster, and the AC Booster pedal. Needless to say after hearing Josh Smith, Allen Hinds, Oz Noy, Andy Timmons, and Scott Henderson demo these pedals ... I was sold.
Now I know any of those players can pretty much plug into any pedal and make it sound impressive. But that's a different topic.
Back on point ... Josh Smith ... The minute I head the first few notes he played I was in. He just has such a great feel and touch. He tends to swing a lot of his phrases like a bebop jazz guitarist would traditionally do. This is something I don't tend to do in my own playing and I think this is what drew me in.
And like most guitar players that I dig ... his tone is awesome.
Anyway ... This Guitar Lick we break down here is pretty straight forward. It's starts out with a typical blues pentatonic thing. But he turns that simple pentatonic idea into a slick line by sliding into notes.
Then Josh breaks into a cool little arpeggio idea.
This is the first of many guitar licks from the awesome Josh Smith that I am looking forward to breaking down.

On a side note ... I'm excited to be using a new marshall 50th anniversary amp. The one watt JTM1. It's a great little amp, very dynamic and responsive. I'm hoping to do a review on it soon. You'll see in this video I play thru the lick three different times in full (twice at the beginning of part 1 and once at the end of part 2 of the lesson). The first time I set the Marshall JTM1 to be slightly broken up. The second and third time I played using more of a clean tone. Each time I used a different pickup position on my guitar.
I am using some guitar pedals in front of the amp. I'm running the guitar into an xotic fx RC booster pedal ... then into a Maxon SD9 Distortion Pedal ... then into a Strymon BlueSky Reverberator reverb pedal ... then into a Maxon AD999 analog delay pedal. That might seem like a lot of things affecting the tone of the amp. But in reality ... the xotic fx RC booster just thickens the tone slightly. The Maxon SD9 Distortion pedal is used to slightly break up the amp at the low volume i'm playing at. The Strymon reverb pedal is used to slighty give breath to the punchy Bogner 1x12 cab i'm playing through. And finally the Maxon delay pedal just gives some life to the notes. All 4 pedals are dialed in very sparingly.
Hope you enjoy.
