As we continue to celebrate our 50th anniversary, we’re thrilled to share the next installment in our Next Generation series. If you’re just tuning in, we’ve asked some longtime artists and Taylor players to nominate an artist who they think we should be watching for the next fifty years. This time, we called on beloved singer-songwriter, poet and Taylor player Jewel to point us in the right direction, and she has nominated Steph Johnson.
Steph is a multi-talented multi-hyphenate, splitting her time between songwriting, guitar, and activism. With five studio albums under her belt, including her latest, 2020’s So In Love, a collection of jazz standards. Throughout her career, Steph has tracked a wide range of musical territory, moving seamlessly between blues, jazz, soul and beyond. Outside working on her own music, Steph is a leader in San Diego’s nonprofit scene with Voices of Our City Choir, an organization she co-founded in 2016. The choir is a collaboration between local musicians and unhoused persons from the San Diego area that seeks to elevate the voices and experiences of people experiencing homelessness. For this episode, Steph joined us in studio to perform her song “Happy People” on a Taylor 50th Anniversary 614ce LTD.
