This Lesson is based off of a Michael Brecker tune and has some amazing Melodic Phrasing and one super cool Blues Chromatic idea that we'll take a look at.
We all love learning Licks from our favorite Guitar Players. Most people learn from transcribing what others do on the same instrument of choice. But a great thing to do is to look outside your instrument for influence. And for Guitar there is no better place to draw new, fresh and unique ideas from then the good 'ol Saxophone. This is because they have to breath into their instrument … forcing them to pause and put rests between phrases … where on guitar we can just run lines until the sun comes up with no rests between notes.
Not to get into a long theory on the subtle differences between Saxophone (or most wind instruments) and guitar … I'll just say … Learn as much from those instruments as you can … cuz you will begin to see your guitar playing go in a different direction and you will sound much less like a clone of every other guitar player out there.
Check out guys like Michael Brecker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Wayne Shorter and Charlie Parker to name just a few. Or if you somehow can't find your way to be inspired by Saxophone … and only draw inspiration from Guitar Sounds … check out Scott Henderson, Allan Holdsworth, Allen Hinds, Michael Landau, Mike Stern, John Schofield and Oz Noy to name just a few. These guys all use Lines and Concepts from horn players to spice up their guitar playing.
Either way … just enjoy exploring and think outside of the box.
