http://www.guitarBreakdown.com/ - In part 2 of this Lesson Series we explore some Chordal Bends. This is a technique used often by Country Guitar Players, but is definitely a technique that has been used by some of the greatest Rock and Blues players.

This technique tries to emulate the sounds of a Pedal Steel guitar … especially when used with a glassy clean guitar tone … and while playing in the country style. This is most often achieved by playing one or two notes of a chord while bending another note in that chord and letting all notes ring together. So basically one or two notes stay static while another note bends to pitch.

And although it definitely has a country vibe to it … we will show a few examples of how it can be used in more of a Blues or Rock way. The first examples we show here to demonstrate this comes from Jimi Hendrix's Little Wing. But you can hear guys like Stevie Ray Vaughan and many others use this same technique.

The second example to showcase how you can make this sound more Bluesy … comes from Michael Landau. Check out the intro to part one of this Lesson Series … you'll hear where we played something Michael Landau posted on youTube recently in which he starts out with this Chordal type Bending. A really cool way to establish a specific tonality when solo improvising.

We end part two of this Lesson series with another cool Josh Smith Lick. This one comes from Josh's first Lesson Package that GuitarBreakdown.com released earlier this year … called "Beyond the Blues". This Lesson Package is filled with a ton of Josh's favorite Licks. Josh is well known for seamlessly mixing country Licks with Blues and Jazz Phrases. This Lick that we show at the end of this Lesson demonstrates how you can use this Chordal Bending Technique to end a Lick in a really cool way … and firmly establish the chord that you resolve to.
