Scott Henderson Jazz Blues Fusion Guitar Solo Breakdown - Part 4 of 6 - Guitar Lesson
Check out Mr. Scott Henderson playing this amazing solo in this clip ...

The solo part transcribed in this lesson starts at about 0:45 and ends around 2:20.
Yes ... It says part 4 of 6 ... lol
This is one of my favorite Scott Henderson live guitar solos ... which means, I must make this a long detailed lesson. :)
But seriously, when I first transcribed this solo I had no idea how many great, useful ideas were hidden inside. It immediately caught my ear but I didn't realize why it did until I began breaking it down. It pretty much boiled down to the fact that there were so many small ideas or motifs and licks that could be quickly and easily applied to my own playing once I learned them.
That is what I am hoping will be the case for all of you when working through this lesson.
This guitar lesson will walk you note for note through this amazing solo of Scott Henderson's improv over a great song called Equinox. This is a pretty simple tune but one that is a lot of fun to play over (search for John Coltrane and Equinox on youTube to see some amazing horn playing on this tune).
In this lesson we will break down some of Scott Henderson's diminished licks, a few melodic minor ideas, an idea based out of the seventh mode of melodic minor ... the altered scale, and also talk about a few chromatic ideas ... but in-between show a bunch of simple pentatonic type licks. Pentatonic licks that Scott has a way of making sound cooler then most pentatonic licks by his way of phrasing and his use of the whammy bar.
I'm sure if you are checking out this lesson ... it means you are familiar with Scott Henderson. But if you are not familiar with this guitar god ... just do a youTube search. He is one of the most sought after instructors at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood California (GIT). He has recorded and toured with some of the most amazing musicians ... Chick Corea, Jean Luc Ponty, Jeff Berlin, Steve Smith, T Lavitz, John Humphrey, Kirk Covington, Victor Wooton, Scott Kinsey, and Gary Willis ... to name just a few.
He has a style all his own in which he seamlessly mixes John Coltrane and Miles Davis type jazz with Led Zeppelin type rock guitar. Just check out any of the Tribal Tech CD's ... Dr. Hee, Nomad, Illicit, Face First, Reality Check, and the new CD called "X". Also check out his solo blues CD's (they are again a great mix of jazz and rock) ... this is not the typical blues ... but it has elements of traditional blues guitar playing and song arrangements mixed with Scott Henderson one and only unique twist.
Also check out Scott's website ...

and don't miss clicking on the "message board" link ... unlike any other guitarist I have seen, he took so much time for several years answering posts and questions from his fans ... and it's all on this discussion forum ... pretty amazing stuff.
Anyway ... I don't think anyone actually reads any of this stuff that I write ... but if you do ... thank you!!! and let me know in a comment!
I hope you enjoy this lesson ...
