Our friends Merrick Winter and Pete Jonas are at it again with another installment of our "In Context" series. This time utilizing Lossy.
This is from Merrick:
"Pete and I spent an afternoon with Lossy in his studio in LA. We wanted to show how Lossy can be used as a live tracking/mix tool to ‘degrade’ different elements of a track, both acoustic and synthetic. We were most drawn to the noise artefacts that it creates, especially in packet loss and jitter mode. The filter was also incredibly useful for the Moog Modular synth. We started with a riff on a baritone guitar, tracking a DI and a fully wet Lossy signal, panned hard to the sides, to provide some subtle movement. We did the same with the bass, drum samples and the piano. The hold feature created some really wonderful soundscapes, morphing and re-sampling underneath the live parts as we played. We also used Lossy as a more global ‘mixing' tool by printing the track through the reverb and blending fully wet passes left and right on packet repeat and inverse mode. One feature we loved but which didn't make it into the track is the gate (gnarly with a fuzz). Studio staple. 11/10 would lossy again."
