The Gibson Les Paul Standard debuted in 1958, was discontinued just two years later and was revived in 1968. It was British guitar legends such as Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton who proved America’s “Standard” was—and is—an absolute megastar of tone. Today, although 1957-1960 models are more prized by collectors, original 1968 and 1969 Standards still command tens of thousands of dollars.
The Gibson Les Paul Standard ’60s Limited Edition delivers the vintage vibe of those groundbreaking guitars, but in a brand new, ready-for-you model. This stunning reissue features a mahogany body, AAA-figured maple top, ’60s-style SlimTaper mahogany neck, rosewood fretboard, two Gibson Burstbucker 61 humbuckers (based on vintage PAF pickups), Grover Rotomatic machine heads and ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge.
“I’m a big fan of classic rock and heavy guitar riffs, and when I think of my heroes like Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Susan Tedeschi, a lot of them played the iconic Les Paul,” says Los Angeles session guitarist and online educator Angela Petrilli. “I really enjoy the texture, nuance and character a Les Paul brings. It can be a very delicate instrument when it needs to be, but it can also punch you and be very guttural. Compared to a ’50s Les Paul Standard, I would say the ’60s models have a bit more bite and roundedness. When I play a Les Paul, I’m looking for a chunky, round sound. I want something that feels like a nice, warm blanket.”
