Introducing the new Shure SM7dB dynamic microphone. In this demo video, hosted by recording engineer, mix engineer and producer Nick Krill (The War On Drugs, Roar, Generationals and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), you can learn about the early history of the Shure SM7 microphone, find out what makes it such a great choice for recording vocals and hear the new built-in preamp in action.
Tracing its history back to 1973, the SM7 family has long been a first-choice for capturing vocals in the recording studio, with perhaps its most famous use being on Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album. Other artists who have used SM7-family mics include Death Cab for Cutie, John Mayer, Metallica's James Hetfield, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, and so many more.
While the SM7 and SM7B capture incredible vocals, a quality which has made them the top choice for podcasting and broadcast applications, they're known for their need for preamp gain. With the SM7dB's newly designed phantom powered preamp, you can choose between clean boosts of +18dB and +28dB, both of which deliver the same sonic character long-associated with the SM7B. Of course, this preamp can be fully bypassed offering the same performance as the SM7B. Like its predecessors, the SM7dB also features two switchable tone-shaping options: a presence boost and a bass rolloff.
The SM7dB also comes with a close-talk windscreen and a 1 3/8” thread adapter, both of which are included in the box.
