Drawing on old school funk influences and having played with the likes of Vulfpeck, Scary Pockets and Bernie Worrell, keyboard player Steve Watkins (Swatkins) is renowned for his authentic, deep pocket and heavy-grooving tunes. All of which are a bass player’s dream.
In this video lesson, Elixir Strings artist Mike X Zuniga deconstructs the looping bassline from Swatkins’ "Until I Get Back" in drop-D with a pseudo-flatwound tone achieved simply by rolling his tone control way down. Once you’ve got the notes down, really nailing the feel of the parts will be key to bringing them to life!
Explaining why he’s such a fan of Elixir Strings on both his electric and acoustic guitars, Mike says, “Elixir is the best string company in the business. They are tried and true and provide long lasting tone. I use them on all my basses.”
