The HeadRush Prime pedalboard is a tone workstation and amp cloner loaded with a massive library of guitar amplifier, cabinet, microphone and effects emulations. This DSP powerhouse also includes a looper capable of playing up to 20 minutes of layered audio at a time, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth audio, an onboard 6-in/4-out USB audio interface for recording, and drag-and-drop IR loading. However, this versatile processor doesn’t stop at being an ultimate guitar rig. The HeadRush Prime also includes a full collection of bass and vocal effects—including Antares Auto-Tune. Furthermore, it can act as a portable classroom-in-a-box via its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity that lets you load songs (which you can loop, slow down and change keys), stream online lessons and more.
“In the new HeadRush Prime, you have the best of all worlds,” says guitarist Rob Gueringer (a.k.a. Freaky Rob), who has played with Eminem, Cardi B, Kendrick Lamar, Megan Thee Stallion and others. “It incorporates everything I loved in previous HeadRush models, and adds everything I was missing.”
The HeadRush Prime is obviously an extremely deep sound-creation and performance engine, but every nuance of your tone can be programmed simply and intuitively using the seven-inch, high-resolution touchscreen. Even if your programming chops don’t extend much further than choosing presets and stepping on buttons, the HeadRush Prime provides supreme dominion over your sonic options with 12 footswitches (each with RGB indicators and scribble-script displays), an onboard expression pedal with toe switch and a multicore processor that delivers gapless switching (no more annoying and unnatural cut-offs to your reverb decays, delay washes and other effects).
“The way I use the HeadRush is not typical,” says Gueringer. “I’m actually using it as a pedalboard—except all of the individual pedals I used to have to carry around and deal with their different technical problems are all inside this board now. In Stomp Mode, for every patch I use in the HeadRush Prime, I can see the individual stompboxes for that patch in the foot-selector displays. One of my favorite phasers is in here. For a phaser, I’m very much an old soul. I like a tone that resembles the ’60s and ’70s, and this one is really funky, warm and sweet. The HeadRush Prime also lets me swap out pedals in the signal chain, depending on the song, the artist or whatever it is I’m doing. My sound is my sound. The HeadRush Prime is the best possible way for me to go from gig to gig and keep my actual sound.”
