Universal Audio creates audio interfaces, plugins and more for every level of recording. We caught up with them at NAMM 2020 and asked about how to pick the perfect Universal Audio interface, whether it be Arrow, Twin Twin X, X4 or one of their Apollo X rackmount units.
The Arrow is the smallest and most portable entry point into the Universal Audio platform. It is perfect for mobile recording with two mic inputs, a guitar input, stereo and headphone output, access to the UA plugins, and more — all powered by a Thunderbolt connection to your computer. It has a single DSP chip called a SOLO.
The Thunderbolt 3 Apollo Twin X is the next up, and available in a number of versions. It has two mic inputs, a guitar input, headphone output, and the ability to run two sets of speakers. The Twin X is available as a DUO or QUAD, reflecting the amount of processing power on-board. For Windows 7 or higher users, UA also has a USB-based Twin interface.
The Apollo X4 is similar to a Twin in its desktop form factor, but with more ins and outs, making it ideally suited for recording more sources at once.
At the highest end, with the Apollo X6, X8, X8p, and X16 rackmount units, the choice is really about what your workflow is, how you're going to integrate with other hardware in your studio and what your recording or mixing needs might be. Each unit has a different I/O configuration, so you can choose the best audio interface for your setup. The Apollo X rackmount units have the most amount of power with HEXA-core DSP.
Launching at NAMM 2020, LUNA is the new Universal Audio recording system included with the purchase of every Thunderbolt Arrow and Apollo — to be released in spring 2020.
