At ADC 2024, we caught up with Alexandre from CLAP to discuss recent developments of the realtively new plugin format. Since its initial announcement, CLAP - supported by Bitwig and U-he - has matured. Alexandre explained that the extension set has expanded, making the standard stable and robust, which has led to wider adoption. Notable DAWs such as Bitwig, FL Studio, Reaper, and Studio One have integrated CLAP.
He pointed out the ease of porting existing plugins using JUCE to the CLAP format, often achievable within a day. The introduction of unique features like polyphonic modulation and enhanced performance through new implementations incites developers to rethink their plugin architecture for future compatibility.
Alexandre mentioned that FabFilter have recenetly adopted CLAP, primarily due to its open-source nature and free MIT licensing. As they focus on further extensions, WebAssembly is hinted as the next promising technical frontier.
