Max Gerl is a prodigious bass player exploring jazz and improvisational music. His journey on the instrument has gone from Fender Precision Bass, to upright, to his current go-to – a Michael Tobias six-string. We spoke with Gerl about how each type of bass shapes his playing, his debut album Tbilisi, and how music sustains and challenges him.
