In the previous Bluegrass video we learned about the standard Bluegrass strumming pattern. The examples in this lesson show you how to dress up your standard Bluegrass strumming pattern with some standard Bluegrass rhythm fills. If you listen to Bluegrass you will definitely hear these fills all over the place. Once you learn a few Bluegrass tunes you will have a good idea of how these fills are used in a real musical setting.
This first example starts out with the standard Bluegrass strumming pattern on a C chord. Our fill occurs on beat three. You simply play an open 4th string and hammer on to the 2nd fret with your 2nd finger. The second measure is just like the first measure. Do you see how adding that little hammer-on can dress up the standard Bluegrass strumming pattern a little bit?
Example #2 is a fill that usually comes at the end of a phrase in a Bluegrass song. Listen to just about any traditional Bluegrass song and you will probably hear this fill.
