My take:
This pedal is a BEAST. There is truly nothing like it out there. Hudson Electronics classify this as a "discrete class a germanium pre-amplifier". Preamp-type pedals emulate the sound of plugging a guitar straight into a high-end recording console. These type of sounds can be heard on Beatles songs like "Revolution" (among others) as well as songs like "Bodysnatchers" by Radiohead. This unique fuzz-like tone is one-of-a-kind and super cool. And they have nailed it in the high gain setting on this pedal.
What I REALLY love, though, about this pedal is it's usability in the lower gain modes. That super distorted, broken-amp type sound you get from the higher gain settings is useful here and there, but not generally too useful in a more general pop or rock setting. In the medium and low gain modes, there is a WIDE variety of usable tones for just about every style of music – but all with a sort of "toughness" to the sound, a weight, or an "iron" (as recording people say) that sounds like it's going through something expensive.
This is currently my favorite overdrive pedal. It is just a BLAST to play through, and everyone who has tried mine has loved it, without fail. Highly recommended, especially the 24v version.
From the Hudson Electronics website:
"The Broadcast is a transformer coupled, discrete Class-A germanium pre-amplifier based on the classic broadcast consoles of the 1960s. In the low-gain setting, the Broadcast can cover everything from sparkling clean boost through to transparent overdrive, all with a healthy dose of volume available to push your amp. The Broadcast features a specially selected Triad steel-core transformer and a NOS germanium transistor. Advancing the gain on the Broadcast starts to saturate the transformer and the pedal’s discrete circuitry, giving rise to a gentle and dynamic compression coupled with subtle thickening of the mid-range. With the gain switch in the high setting and the trim control wound up, the Broadcast starts to deliver heavier distorted sounds with a warm and fuzzy edge to them. The Broadcast covers a wide range of driven and distorted tones whilst remaining dynamic, responding well to pick attack and the subtle nuances of every player."
