Guthrie Govan Blues Mutations 4 Guitar Lesson Part 4 of 5
This Blues study by Guthrie is one of my favorite. It starts with some great chord choices that lay the foundation for this great solo. It's a standard blues progression but with a 12/8 shuffle feel and with a jazz flavor to it.
The first section of the solo is a straight forward blues solo ... using the pentatonic scale ... but in that special Guthrie Govan way. With his usual great phrasing and articulation.
The second part of this solo has jazz concepts woven throughout. It's still bluesy ... but bends the ear a little bit more. He uses chromatic lines and introduces a great scale based off of melodic minor .. the lydian dominant scale.
This lesson originally appeared in the "Guitar Techniques" magazine (Dec 2001 to March 2002). It was a four part series which ended with this lesson.
I would highly recommend trying to track down these back issues if they are still available. I actually would recommend tracking any issues that Guthrie had an article in. He is a great player and an equally great teacher.
The purpose of this lesson is to expand the teaching of this lesson a little bit. To share with you some of the things I took from the lessons while going through it. Originally each one of these lessons were about 3 or 4 pages with only a page or so of Guthrie explaining what was going on. Unfortunately, this should have been more like a 10 page article. There is so much good stuff in this lesson.
I tried not to bore you with a ton of theory and I know most of you are really just interested in learning cool licks. But I started this 5 part lesson with 2 full parts based solely on the rhythm parts. I hope most of you don't get turned off by that because there is so much good stuff there (at least I think there is).
Some of the greatest solo guitar players understood harmony and theory and had great understanding of rhythmic structure ... and that is a large part of why they are such great soloists.
Alright then ... enough yapping. This lesson could have turned into a 10 part lesson ... But I'm not sure you would've all stuck around for that.
lol
On a side note ... I'm excited to be using a new marshall 50th anniversary amp. The one watt JTM1. It's a great little amp, very dynamic and responsive. I'm hoping to do a review on it soon.
Hope you enjoy.
