Before the solidbody electric guitar reigned supreme, the Gibson L-5 had become the hollowbody archtop of choice among guitarists of the jazz era and was already one of the world’s most popular guitars when Gibson first electrified the model in 1951. In the early ‘70s, Gibson launched a solidbody version of its flagship archtop, featuring top-of-the-line aesthetic touches, including a highly figured maple top, engraved tailpiece, and a five-layer bound widow's peak, plus a pair of low-impedance pickups that made instruments like this 1973 Gibson L-5S solidbody a hit among fusion jazzers like Pat Martino and John McGlaughlin—not to mention a few rock icons, like the Rolling Stones!
