CHAPTER TIMESTAMPS BELOW
Lollar has offered pickups of Fender's line of Mustang guitars for about as long as we've been selling pickups -- only as Strat pickups. When customers asked for replacement pickups for their Mustangs, we just helped them to choose whichever Strat pickups we offered that met their needs the best and swapped the covers out for no-hole covers. But now, we are pleased to announce that we offer two Mustang pickup sets; the Lollar Mustang and Mustang Special! No need to call or email to order "off menu" items, they'll be available for order on our website and from your local Lollar authorized dealers!
Fender launched the Mustang guitar in 1964 as a "student" instrument, with a shorter scale and smaller overall size. As such, they didn't pour resources into creating a bespoke pickup for what was thought to be a stepping stone for players eventually getting a "real" guitar. So, they used what they had lying around -- Strat pickups. At the time, they used the same pickup in both positions, which sounded good but also provided a noticeable imbalance in output and tone between the two positions and they didn't offer hum-cancellation when both pickups were engaged. Of course, as time passed, many players found that the Mustang was much more than a child's toy. With a good set up and perhaps a few small upgrades, it's a very capable instrument in its own right.
With our new Mustang offerings, we have brought the original design into the modern era by winding the bridge a bit hotter than the neck for better balance and it's also reverse wound/reverse polarity to reduce hum when using both pickups. To get closest to the original Mustang sound that's found in the original mid-'60s instruments, search no further than our standard Mustang pickups. If you want a little extra punch and power, our Mustang Special offers a hotter, thicker output with a slightly rounded off top end, more low-end frequency response and increased sustain.
In other words, the standard Mustang pickups are like your dad's classic '64-1/2 Mustang convertible that you remember cruising the roads with your family in -- it purrs and looks good doing it; it's a classic for reason. And the Mustang Special is your cool uncle's '69 Mach 1 modified and built for tearing up the strip -- it's all muscle, lean and mean; but it's still a Mustang at heart.
