I have made a number of guitars over the years, generally with Warmoth parts and generally Stratocaster types using authorized parts. But I always bought pre-finished parts from http://www.warmoth.com which can add to the cost dramatically. So I decided to buy unfinished parts and dye my own electric guitar this time - something I have never done before!
Watch how I take this custom Warmoth Strat body, how I use fillers for the grain (bought from http://www.wudtone.com ), and then apply the dye. I think the results are exactly what I was looking for. So how hard is this to do? and how long does it take to complete?
I bought my dye from http://www.crimsonguitars.com as a set for using over time, and while not that low cost, they should last for years and are water based. I show how you can mix the dye to any color you can imagine, and while my dye finish may not be yours, the overall method is clearly and concisely shown in this video.
This whole series of videos will show you EXACTLY how to create a Fender Stratocaster (with licensed parts) right through to the final guitar over a series of videos. I have a very specific design of this guitar. Although it 'looks' like a regular Strat, in fact it uses a number of guitar parts probably never created in this exact way and included as I have.
Part two will show the Warmoth neck and how I used dyes preparing the guitar neck for final finish along with the body.
Other components used in the series include: Fender Locking Machine Heads, an ABM tremolo unit (separate review), a Fender Clapton boost circuit and its installation, Fender 69 custom shop pickups and one or two other surprises along the way.
This video series is entirely unsponsored and I purchased every single part just as you would have. I sincerely hope that this series of videos can inspire you too to have a go at creating a guitar what ever type it might be. I have spent considerable time creating these video series at my expense:
