The Pulse Doppler is a next level phase-shifter that pulses in many different ways, offering pitch bending doppler effects, vibe, phaser and tremolo. With his teammate Dan Coggins, Thorpy revisited the legendary Lovetone Doppelganger and used it as a springboard for a new device that preserves the spirit of a highly tweakable 4-stage phaser/vibrato while expanding on the sounds and flexibility for today's player.
The key to understanding this dual-notch phaser lies with the interaction of the Manual and Depth knobs. Manual, like in a flanger, allows for manual sweeping of a static phaser when the Depth is CCW. However, when the Depth is increased, Manual sets the freq range of the sweep and allows for numerous sweet spots that drastically change the feel and symmetry of the waveforms. To As a visual aid, the twin notches and their place in the sweep can be seen in two very helpful LEDs that flash in time with rate. Thinking more about the notch filters, the Dual switch either syncs them or arranges them in a figure 8 pattern which really gets those oblong vibe tones going in addition to more complex phaser sweeps and bleeps.
Usually phasers will take the dry signal and add this to the effect signal for a phaser effect. The Pulse Doppler also lets you invert the phase signal for more hollowed out tones, plus the Pulse setting rolls off low-end in the phaser signal for some really nice subtle sweeps and an air-y sounds.
As we’ve seen with other modulation pedals from ThorpyFX, a dry blend allows you to tailor the intensity of the effect and set it back in the mix or go full vibrato. The left footswitch also makes it easy to blast into Vibrato tones hands-free or simply toggle between subtle and chopping tremolo, for example. The Pulse Doppler is handmade in the UK and designed to be the last word in phase shifters, using high quality components and a custom laser etched enclosure with a sleek matte black faceplate.
