Soundgarden, "Spoonman" guitar lesson. Today we're using the CMATMODS Brownie Distortion for this smooth and chunky riff. Drop D riffs are always fun to play but it's the 7/4 time signature in Spoonman that keeps this riff in your head all day. Having a tight drummer is key, especially during the 6 count rest in between the verses. The chorus plays it straight with a 4/4 time signature, using a heavy riff in the sweet spot for Drop D, the 3rd and 5th frets. Keeping the rhythm loose is also crucial to the flow of Spoonman and only at the end with 3 chugs of the bottom 3 strings does every instrument play the same thing. The CMATMODS Brownie is a perfect choice for this riff which demands a tight sound for dropped tuning while staying warm and fizz-free on the top end. Enjoy your daily guitar lesson.
