SRV’s unique tone is largely due to his hands and how he attacks the strings, but knowing his gear choices and more importantly how he dialed it in can help you get one step closer. For starters, a loud Fender amp that is breaking up on its own is key, especially in his earlier recording. At the foundation of the Crazy Tube Circuits Crossfire is an amp in a box that offers a variety of mid 60s, Blackpanel tones with the same tone stack and bright switch. To help adapt to your gear, two headroom options for the amp circuit offer tight, dynamic tones like 4 6L6s with a SS rectifier or lower headroom and sag like a tube rectified dual 6L6s amp. The other key ingredient is the famous green overdrive circuit and the Crossfire is loaded with lots of essential mods including asymmetrical or symmetrical clipping, a toggle to boost the overall gain and bass response plus selectable 9-18v operation of the drive to shape its own headroom and compression.
Lastly, the Crossfire allows you to place any effect between the overdrive and the amplifier stage, with a passive effects loop. This allows delay and modulation to shine or get pushed by the overdrive signal.
Like all Crazy Tube Circuits, the Crossfire is built in Greece and expertly voiced for players of any genre!
