The GFI System Skylar Reverb and Orca Delay share a powerful, yet easy to use form factor and that dishes out high quality time-based effects. Each pedal can be played in mono or stereo by using TRS cable on the input and ouput jacks. Seeing them side by side, the Skylar and Orca’s knobs and functionality are very similar, so if you learn one, the other is pretty much figured out! The 4 knobs are also switches all have multiple functions thanks to GFI’s familiar push, hold and twist commands. For example, the Orca’s 3 main parameters of Time, Repeats and Level are adjusted as normal but holding any knob down and turning (twist) adjusts secondary parameters like Wow & Flutter in Orca’s tape mode or EQ and pre-delay in Skylar’s Plate reverb mode. The 4th knob selects between the pedal’s 4 unique modes but also gets you a 4 secondary parameter when twisted or the Options and Global settings when tapped or held. Both of these menu pages aren’t super complicated and handle options such as tap tempo subdivisions in the Orca, audio path summing, and whether Tap tempo or A/B presets are the priority on the right footswitch.
Back to the modes: the Skylar is loaded with Spatium, Shimmer, Plate and Tremble (a mix of tremolo and reverb). The Orca has a mix of modulated and pitch shifted echoes with Digital, Tape, Diffuse and Ambient. The LCD display show helpful information for dialing in parameters like delay or decay time, not to mention heel and toe values when an expression pedal is used or with the onboard ramp function. Much like an expression pedal, the momentary ramp gradually changes up to 3 primary parameters as long as you hold the footswitch. A perfect example would be morphing the feedback level or increasing the reverb decay to enhance specific parts.
The GFI System Orca and Skylar get just deep enough to give you additional parameters and settings without detracting from the creative experience. If you’ve been looking for a Delay or Reverb with multi-modes and a couple presets without having to read a book first, the Orca and Skylar are just the ticket. Plus, they are built with high quality components and sound immense in stereo!
