The WAT?! Ancient Echos takes a refreshing approach to the PT-2399 delay and Belton brick reverb pedals over the last decade. Firstly, the dry signal gets treated to an input buffer and analog preamp while the wet signal starts a long journey through pre-delay, modulation, reverb and various filtering. The Pre-delay circuit, adjusted by the Echo control, can be instant, add a bit of slapback to the reverb or extend the reverb’s decay in long settings. You’ll find a lot of interactivity with these controls, especially since the pre-delay has a portion of the signal fed back into itself, which you can adjust via the Reflections knob, expression or the momentary Summon switch. The amount of high frequencies you dampen will also affect the presence of the pre-delay in the overall mix and how quickly the self-oscillation blooms with heavy Reflections. The modulation circuit has its own Rate and Depth which provides subtle warping or fast vibrato. It too is very interactive with the pre-delay.
Finally, the Reverb stage takes all this echo and movement and places it into a small chamber or vast universe with help from the Resonance or decay time control. To fine tune the output volume to match your rig, there’s a set and forget volume trimmer on the inside.
