Rage Against The Machine "Know Your Enemy" guitar lesson. Today we're using a Digitech Whammy DT and a Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret MKIII to capture the tone in this classic Tom Morello riff. The first key to this tune is using a guitar with either a momentary on/off switch or one with two volume controls to achieve the "killswitch" effect. This choppy sound is made even stranger when a Whammy is set to harmonize a 5th above the guitar signal. Know Your Enemy also has Tom Morello's famous crunch tone from his Marshall JMC800 so what better pedal than the Dirty Little Secret MKIII and a thick, scooped EQ. After the Whammy riff, the tempo suddenly changes and a fat combo full of power chords ensue. This RATM riff is a great example of knowing when to step back and lock into the groove of the song.
