In this week's PMT College episode, Leigh Fuge of MusicTeacher.com explains the basic theory behind major chords!
Music theory is often viewed by many players as something scary or daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Theory can open many musical doors and give you so much insight into the world of playing guitar. It can allow you to see patterns and hear things in your mind before you commit to playing anything on the instrument.
Theory can tell us a range of information from the notes we can play to the chords we can use through to chord progressions that will always work together. In this lesson we’re going to kick that off by looking at chord construction and we’re going to talk about how to construct major chords using music theory.
You probably already know a bunch of Major chord shapes, but have you ever wondered why they are major chords? Or what goes into making a major chord? To start off, you need to use the major scale. The major scale is the gateway to theory. It can tell us everything we need to know about a topic, and if the topic isn’t directly linked to the major scale, the major scale can be amended to make it fit.
