Learn one of the most iconic intro riffs of all time! In this week's PMT College lesson, Leigh Fuge of MusicTeacher.com shows us how to play the classic track 'Paranoid' by Black Sabbath.
When you think of the name Tony Iommi, you probably think of awesome, crushing rock riffs. The
guy did pretty much create the template for heavy metal after all. Throughout the early stages of Black Sabbaths career, Iommi unleased riff after riff which cemented his place as one of the more influential and innovative guitar players in the rock world, and it also gave us guitar players plenty of awesome riffs to sink our teeth into.
Iommi’s riffing style was simple but powerful. His riffs were often fairly simple to learn, but they did
contain some challenging aspects. His unique style was created in part by him losing the tips of some of his fretting hand fingers and re-learning the way that he approached the guitar. The riff we’re going to focus on in this lesson is a riff that almost never came to be.
This is the intro riff from the track Paranoid. This was a last minute addition to the bands second album and was written after the album was completed, because the band had a few minutes of tape left to fill. This simple track went on to become a staple in rock guitar.
